I always tell people that even though I’ve been working as a professional artist for almost 20 years, only a small percentage of my work has actually been seen by the public. In addition to my Johnny Toons blog, I had started a different cartoon blog a couple of years ago called “shapsnots” (shapsnots.wordpress.com)
The basic idea was a collection of weird characters who represented my family, friends, neighbors, etc. I stopped doing the blog early in 2012 because I didn’t have the time to keep up with it, however I still get hits on it. In fact, I received some cartoon love today for this particular cartoon. A big thanks to Blackboard Daze! 🙂

One of the greatest influences and inspirations for me as an artist has been the work of Ralph Steadman. For those who have never heard of the name, Ralph Steadman is a BRILLIANT illustrator from England who gained fame illustrating the work of the American journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Over the years I purchased several of Thompson’s books just because Steadman created illustrations for them. Then I finally started to read them and I loved his journalistic voice. Thompson was a voice of truth, rebellion and twisted tales and called out the swine who run this country and who have been using it as their personal trough. Sadly Thompson took his life a few years ago because we sure could use his voice now, more than ever. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE LATE, GREAT FATHER OF GONZO JOURNALISM, HUNTER S. THOMSPON!!!
